What is a sitemap.xml?

An XML file listing your site's URLs with metadata (last modified, change frequency, priority) that helps search engines discover and crawl your pages efficiently.

Where do I put sitemap.xml?

At your domain root (yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml), reference it in robots.txt, and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

What should priority and changefreq be?

Priority is a hint relative to your own pages (1.0 homepage, 0.5 typical pages). Changefreq tells crawlers how often content changes. Search engines treat both as hints, not commands.

Is there a URL limit?

The sitemap protocol allows 50,000 URLs / 50MB per file. The generator warns you as you approach the limit and explains sitemap-index files.

Do I need lastmod on every URL?

It's optional but recommended - accurate lastmod dates help crawlers prioritize fresh content.
